We are trying to schedule a meeting with the Family Law Section of the Oregon State Bar to discuss HB 2559 and where we may be able to find common ground. Thus far, all our proposed times (and there have been several) have been rejected without a suggested alternative time.
**UPDATE** We have a meeting scheduled for March 14. Unfortunately, the house judiciary committee adjourns March 15. I pray that they will give us a work group and send this on to the senate judiciary committee for consideration, as we were given no time to reach compromise with the other side. To the house judiciary committee, please do not kill this bill. The people suffering in Oregon deserve your consideration and we deserve a vote.
Please encourage any divorce lawyers you know to reach out to me at robindescamp@yahoo.com to discuss alimony reform. I believe there are many areas which we can agree on, and start to work towards a consensus that is fair for both parties in a divorce.
In the meantime, if a friend who may face an alimony award asks you, "who should I hire to represent me in my divorce?" be sure to tell them this:
Don't hire any lawyer who does not support alimony reform in some respect. That lawyer is NOT on your side.
